Bridgeland/Riverside is one official City of Calgary community that grew from two historically distinct neighbourhoods just northeast of downtown across the Bow River. Riverside, along the river flats, and Bridgeland, up on the hill above it, both developed in the early 1900s as working-class and immigrant neighbourhoods, with a strong Italian heritage still visible in the area's churches, shops, and family-run restaurants. Today the two names are used together, and the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association represents the whole area. The community includes the former site of the Calgary General Hospital, redeveloped into mixed-use residential blocks since the hospital's 1998 demolition. 1 Avenue NE has become a walkable main street with cafes, restaurants, and shops, while the hillside offers some of the best downtown skyline views in the city. Housing ranges from century-old character homes and 1950s bungalows to new infill and mid-rise condos.
