Inglewood is widely recognized as Calgary's oldest neighbourhood, with development beginning in 1875 near the newly built Fort Calgary at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Originally known as East Calgary, the community was renamed Inglewood in 1911 after a nearby homestead. Today the neighbourhood centres on 9th Avenue SE, considered the city's first main street, now lined with more than a hundred independent shops, art galleries, breweries, and restaurants. Inglewood is also home to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, a protected wildlife area at the meeting point of the Bow and Elbow rivers, along with the Inglewood Aquatic Centre and several riverside parks. Located in southeast Calgary directly across the Elbow River from Fort Calgary, Inglewood combines heritage architecture, an active arts and music scene, and close proximity to downtown.
