Southview was established in 1950, making it the last community developed within the Greater Forest Lawn area, and its curvilinear streets and period street names still reflect that early postwar planning. It is the smallest of these southeast communities in population, bordered on the west by the Bow River, which gives many streets views of the river valley, downtown Calgary, and the Rocky Mountains beyond. The neighbourhood is currently home to a major redevelopment by Calgary Housing, a mixed income project that broke ground in 2026 and will eventually bring more than 1,000 residents to the community across multiple phases. Mountain View Elementary serves local families. Southview's northern boundary runs along 17 Avenue SE, placing it within easy reach of the MAX Purple rapid bus line and the shops of International Avenue.
