Housing affordability and choice are critical contributors to Calgarians' quality of life.  To remain an attractive place to live, Calgary must offer a range of housing options to meet the needs of its citizens at different stages of life and with different financial capabilities.  This includes sufficient stock of affordable rental units. The City of Calgary and City Council has the opportunity to cost-effectively provide more affordable rental housing by allowing the development of secondary suites in all residential neighbourhoods.

Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) Boosts Annual Resale Housing Forecast

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) has revised its 2011 forecast for home sales activity via the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations, and extended it to 2012.

Sales in the second half of 2010 rebounded faster than CREA had previously expected. "The hand-off going into 2011, together with the highs and lows for sales activity posted in 2010, provided guidance for CREA's revised forecast," said Gregory Klump, CREA Chief Economist.

Wild card props up Canadian housing markets over past decade, says RE/MAX

Kelowna, BC  (February 8, 2011)

Tighter inventory levels helped to make the last decade one of the healthiest periods on record for Canadian real estate, insulating markets in major centres from the peaks and valleys characteristic of past decades, according to a report released today by RE/MAX.

The RE/MAX Housing Barometer Report measured monthly sales-to-new listings ratios in 18 major centres across the country from January 2000 to December 2010.  The report found strong seller's/balanced conditions prevailed for much of the time frame, prompting significant gains in housing values.   The lone exception was when the market dipped into buyer's territory during the latter half of 2008 and early 2009.  However, fewer listings served to offset…

Calgary Home Sales Rise Year-Over-Year

Single family homes in the inner-city drive recovery

Calgary, February 1, 2011 – Single family home sales in the City of Calgary edged upwards month-over-month and showed the first year-over-year increase since April 2010, according to figures released today by CREB® (Calgary Real Estate Board).

The number of single family home sales in the month of January 2011 were 787, compared with December 2010, when sales were 734 — an increase of about 7 per cent. The number of condominium sales for the month of January 2011 was 297. This was down from the 320 condominium transactions recorded in December 2010.
