Bowness is one of Calgary's oldest communities, incorporated as its own town in 1951 before residents voted 1,003 to 397 to join the City of Calgary on August 15, 1964. Developer John Hextall built the Bowness Estates subdivision in the early 1900s and donated land along the Bow River that became Bowness Park in 1911, still known today for its century-old lagoon, boat rentals, mini golf and winter ice skating. The community sits between the river and Stoney Trail, with Shouldice Athletic Park and its outdoor sports fields close by. Public school options include Bowness High School, Thomas B.
