The official City of Calgary designation is Patterson, established in 1983 after being planned as Patterson Heights; Prominence, sometimes called Prominence Point, is not a separate municipal community but a residential pocket within Patterson, built largely around condominiums converted from the 1988 Winter Olympics' Broadcast Hill Media Village. The area sits on a hillside above the Bow River valley, bounded roughly by Sarcee Trail to the east and north and Bow Trail to the south, with Edworthy Park bordering it directly to the north and east. Housing ranges from detached homes on the upper streets to more affordable units in the Broadcast Hill condo buildings. Residents are close to Westside Recreation Centre and Westhills Towne Centre for shopping and recreation, and the elevated hillside position gives many homes views into the river valley.
