Fairview is a south Calgary community bounded by Glenmore Trail to the north, Blackfoot Trail to the east, Heritage Drive to the south, and Macleod Trail to the west. The land was annexed by the City in 1956, and Kelwood Corporation developed the community starting in 1959, with the Fairview Shopping Centre opening in 1962. Housing consists mainly of around 1,200 single-family bungalows built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, typically around 1,000 square feet and set on larger lots than most newer Calgary neighbourhoods. The horseshoe-shaped Fairview Industrial district wraps around three sides of the community, and Chinook Centre sits just northwest, along Macleod Trail. Heritage CTrain Station and several bus routes give residents direct transit access into downtown. In recent years Fairview has seen renewed interest from young families, along with reinvestment in its community arena and parks. Its combination of large, mature lots and an established, walkable layout sets it apart from the newer subdivisions further south.
