Discovery Ridge is a community in southwest Calgary, initially planned by a developer in the early 1990s with construction beginning in the late 1990s. Longtime residents historically referred to the area as Jackson's Valley before it was developed. It is bounded by Stoney Trail to the north, 69 Street W to the east, Rocky View County and the city limits to the west, and the Elbow River and Tsuu T'ina Nation reserve to the south. Housing is almost entirely single-family detached and estate homes, with little to no rental or multi-family stock, reflecting an original plan for a gated community that was ultimately not carried through. The community's defining feature is its setting beside Griffith Woods Park, a natural area along the Elbow River known for its old-growth forest and trail network. Discovery Ridge sits apart from Coach Hill and West Springs, further southwest along the Elbow River valley, with a more secluded, wooded character.
