Opened in June 2019, the Bonavista Downs Community Disc Golf Course is Calgary's newest "9 holes, 9 baskets" disc golf course. This course is located on Lake Huron Crescent SE at the Bow Bottom Baseball Fields in Bonavista Downs at the intersections of Anderson Trail, Deerfoot Trail and Bow Bottom Trail.
Bonavista's is a free walk-on course and you're able to use your Frisbee or Ultimate Frisbee but disc golf is generally played with a set of discs which, like golf clubs, all have a different purpose. At a minimum, you'd want to have a driver, a mid-range, and a putter (you likely won't lose track of your discs at this smaller course but most players carry extras of each disc). Golf discs are rated by their speed, glide, fade & turn abilities with starter sets available for $25 - professional quality discs can cost upwards of $50 each.
The objective of disc golf is to throw the disc INTO the basket with the least amount of throws (being closest to the pin, or landing on top doesn't count!). A great resource for disc golf rules, etiquette and techniques is www.discgolfnow.com. There's a few active Calgary disc golf communities on Facebook, too!
This course map is provided by the Bonavista Downs Community Association and shows the tee locations and direction of play. Each hole's tee pads are mounted in the ground and can sometimes be hard to find if the grass hasn't been recently mowed. The point above the hole # on the tee pad shows the direction you'll be throwing and where the basket is located.
The Bonavista Downs Community Disc Golf Course shares space with the expansive off-leash area which almost completely encircles the community and connects to the other off-leash areas in Lake Bonavista. Have fun and enjoy the course!
